DANVILLE, Va. -

George Washington completed its first run through the Piedmont District tonight against the Martinsville Bulldogs.  The Eagles were trying to hang on to a top three seed in 4A North.

GW was up 28 to 9 and kept its foot on the gas.

The Eagles were in the red zone at the 5 yard line. Hunter Byrnes handed off to Akeem Smith who sniffed the endzone putting another touchdown on the board and it was 35 to 9.

Tempers flared a little bit later when Martinsville's Shaq Tinsley fielded the punt near the 45 yard line. He got stuffed on the return by GW's Tyreck Valentine. There was plenty of pushing, shoving and talking that ensued. After multiple personal foul penalties, cooler heads prevailed.

In the fourth, Martinsville's Taj Taylor coughed up the pigskin on the 15 yard line.   Dwight Harris recovered and took off the other way.  Harris motored nearly 70 yards back upfield before he fumbled. Good thing for him that GW recovered.

Byrnes added a long scoring strike to Malik Clements in the endzone. George Washington whipped Martinsville 49 to 9 the final.
