The William Fleming Colonels hosted Martinsville in the Martin Bowl on Friday night.
Orion Martin, the first-year head coach of the Bulldogs was hoping to pull off a win over the Colonels and their first- year head coach Bobby Martin, who also happens to be his uncle.
Fleming receiver Warren Craft, a Virginia Tech basketball commit who racked up 240 yards receiving and three scores in last week's opener, was out Friday night with an ankle injury.
But his teammates tried to pick up the slack. Tyrell Adams went deep to Jabari Robinson for a 71-yard pass play for the Colonels as Robinson sniffed the endzone to put Fleming ahead 14-6.
The Colonels’ air assault continued a little later. Adams found Nijay Wade for another score, and it was 21-6 home team.
The Bulldogs tried to get back into it. Brandon Carter heaved it for Shaq Tinsley out of the endzone. Tinsley went up and made the grab for a spectacular 41-yard gain to get the Dogs out of trouble. Those two connected again from the 10. Tinsley crossed the goal line for 6, and it was a ballgame at 21-19.
Martinsville worked its way into field goal range late but it got blocked, and Fleming hung on for the 21-19 win. Bobby Martin's William Fleming Colonels are now 2-0.
