ROANOKE, Va. -

In the 3A West ranks, Northside knocked off Brookville last week in the opening round.  This week the Vikings faced another Brookville connection, in Jeff Woody, the former Bees head coach who left in the offseason to take over the same job at Monticello High School in Charlottesville.

The Mustangs came into this week's tussle with the same record as Northside at 10 and 1.

The Vikes led 20 to 7 in the third quarter when Dom Dunnaville tried to add to it.  He scrambled and hit Harold Buckner for 27 yards and a touchdown to make it a 20 point cushion early in the third.

The Mustangs cut into it when James St. Hill completed the pass to Alex McNair on the 15 yard scoring hookup and it was 27-13.

Monticello got even closer as St. Hill hit McNair again over the middle for a 6 yard TD and that made it a 7 point game.

Northside responded though as Tyler Doyle went up and made the spectacular grab behind his head, good for 26 yards down to the Monticello 12 yard line.

On the next play, Sam Krizner ran twelve yards for another score.  It was 33 to 20 Vikings at that point.

But it wasn't over.  Monticello got a connection from St. Hill to McNair again.  This time it was for 51 yards on a post pattern deep into Viking territory.

The Mustangs finished the drive with the same combo from 20 yards out.  The score was 33-27 with four minutes left.

That was as close as it got though.  Northside came up with the late interception and hung on to win it 33 to 27.
