    In 3A West, Northside hooked up with Abingdon at Jim Hickam Field in Roanoke County. The Vikings and Falcons started the season by scrimmaging each other in Abingdon. But there was much more at stake Friday night off Peters Creek Road.

    Brookville had won four of the six meetings, and the winner of this game has gone on to win the state title in four of the last five years.

    The Northside Vikings lost Josh Hardister to a broken leg last week. On Friday night Burt Torrence's team put Tra Jackson under center against a Blacksburg team in the playoffs for the first time since 2008 in coach Dave Crist's 40th and final season.

    One of the surprise teams in the first half of the season has been the William Fleming Colonels. On Friday night, Bobby Martin's team put its unbeaten mark on the line, making the short trip to Northside where the Vikings were back at home for the first time in three weeks.

    The Northside Vikings were anxious to take the field again on Friday at Staunton River following back to back losses. As if those weren't bad enough, Burt Torrence's team are without the services of receiver Austin Fisher for the rest of the season after Fisher broke his leg in a car accident last weekend.

    There were plenty of big games across the region, but none bigger than the showdown at Salem Stadium, as Northside tried to bounce back from last week's loss to Hidden Valley, against an old nemesis in the Spartans.

    Northside got word this week that starting lineman and Tennessee commit Chance Hall was lost for the season with a torn Achilles.

    Cave Spring's Jon Roach was a workhorse last week against William Byrd, rushing for 151 yards on a whopping 35 carries. The task this week for Roach and the Knights, a whole lot tougher against a Northside defense that appeared to be in midseason form against Amherst.

  • SPOTLIGHT GAME OF THE WEEK: Northside at Amherst

    This week in Amherst, the Lancers hosted Northside. The Vikings were fresh off their 3A state title, while Amherst was out to erase the memory of a 3 and 8 campaign a year ago, the Lancers first losing season in a decade. This was a statement game for both teams as it has been the last three seasons.
