SALEM, Va. -

Patrick Henry and Salem hadn't met since the 1995 season entering this week's matchup at Salem Stadium.  Both the Patriots and the Spartans were fresh off shutout victories in week one.

Salem Stadium is never an easy place to play. Under Stephen Magenbauer the Spartans are 43-2 at home during the regular season. The only two teams to beat them there have been Brookville led by LoganTthomas back in 2008 and Christiansburg with Brenden Motley under center.

Patrick Henry meanwhile, holds the all-time edge against Salem with a record of 9-5 and is coming off its best season in twelve years last season.

Salem would strike first-- Devante Payne punched it in from a couple yards out to take the 7-0 lead.

But Patrick Henry would answer on a Salem miscue, Kyle Reighard dropped the punt and then tried to heave it up Marcus Terry with the interception as Patrick Henry tied it up at 7 a piece.

The Spartans answered, Austin Couling on 4th and 3  went deep and found Isiah Parker for the touchdown as Salem would take a 14-7 lead into halftime.

Patrick Henry though just like a spider would weave their way back into it.

Trevor Mike punched it in from 16 yards out and the game ws tied at 14 just out of halftime.

Salem tried to answer but the handoff was fumbled and the Patriots were there to jump all over it to force the Salem turnover.  They capitalized from nine yards out, Trevor Mike again punched it in for the touchdown as the Patriots ttook a 21-14 lead into the fourth quarter.

PH was looking to add to it and a hit on Couling forces another turnover and Terry Jones intercepted the pass. But they fumbled the next play and gave it right back to Salem where Devante Payne with his second score of the night tied the game at 21.

The Patriots didn't give up, Quishon Calfee found Cortez Ogden who started cramping up and fell. His friend Salem's Devante Payne helped him by carrying him off the field with the Patrick Henry trainers

Devante Payne, Salem senior, "We're great competitors and he's an old friend of mine. When I see someone hurt like that and nobody else going to step up I don't mind stepping up."

But could PH finish the drive? Calfee's pass on the roll out was intercepted by Isiah Tucker who took it back 74 yards into Patriot territory.

Stephen Magenbauer, Salem Head Coach, "Isiah's interception was huge sort of swinged the mood a little bit. Our quickness really sort of shocked us."

Then the pitch was to Coleman Fox who swept it into the endzone for the touchdown and Salem took a 28-21 lead.  That was all she wrote as Salem survives the Patriot scare with a 28-21 final.

Alan Fiddler, Patrick Henry Head Coach, "Yeah it was a great high school football game and both teams played hard, there were two good high school football teams out here."

Stephen Magenbauer, Salem Head Coach, "We preach you have to play consitent football and there are going to be highs and lows throughout the game and you just have to stay with it."
