In Bedford this week the Liberty Minutemen put a 3 and 1 record on the line against a Rustburg team that was expected to regain the services of Randall Jones who served a two game suspension.
Liberty was on top 21-14 at the break, but punted the ball away in the third. The high snap was recovered by Cam Scott and the Red Devils were in business.
Anthony Lovelace found Brent Thacker in the back of the endzone for the touchdown and it was a ballgame, tied at 21 apiece.
On the next possession the Minutemen living up to that nickname.
Austin Porter found Devin Harper and he broke free and found daylight, picking up 45 yards before being brought down at the Rustburg 26.
On the next play, Matthew Smith emerged from the pile and fought his way in for a Minutemen touchdown, but the kick was blocked, leaving Liberty up 6 at 27-21.
Rustburg responded when Lovelace connected with Will Morris on a 28 yard gain to move the chains. That sets up Lovelace, calling his own number, he swept around the far side and took the ball in for a 20 yard touchdown.
That gave Rustburg the 28 to 27 lead.
But Liberty continued the see saw affair. Porter took it himself on the TD run. It was 33-28 after a missed two point attempt but Liberty had just enough to win a shootout 39 to 34 over Rustburg.
