Virginia Tech still has lot of room for improvement after making strides in reclaiming its place among the top football teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season.

The Hokies' 42-12 loss to UCLA in the Sun Bowl was a bitter indication of just how far they have to go.

And Virginia Tech will do it without quarterback Logan Thomas. He has started the Hokies' last 40 games and will leave Blacksburg with nearly every career passing record in school history. An injury to Thomas in the second quarter of the Sun Bowl allowed coach Frank Beamer and offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler to get an extensive look at backup Mark Leal.

Beamer says Leal will head into spring practice at the top of the depth chart.
