BLACKSBURG, Va. -

Virginia Tech football player and Giles native Cody Journell has been kicked off the football team, the Hokies announced Wednesday.

Journell, a placekicker, is a former Giles High School standout. He has been kicked off the Hokies football team permanently for violating team policies, according to a statement from Coach Frank Beamer.

Journell is 44 of 58 in his career on field goals.

This isn't his first brush with trouble. In December 2011, he was arrested on breaking and entering charges and later agreed to a plea deal of misdemeanor trespassing.

Journell was suspended for the Sugar Bowl that year, and spent nearly a week in jail before being released on a $100,000 bond.

He was also suspended for the Marshall game earlier this year.

Journell is featured on the game ticket's for the Hokies' matchup against Maryland on Saturday, but he won't be on the field.
