Botetourt County leads the state in number of birds taken there

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)—

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has released preliminary figures on the fall and winter hunting seasons, and it was a very good year for sportsmen and women who stalk wild turkey.

The department reports that 3,470 birds were taken during the 2011-12 season, up 29 percent from last year's turkey hunt. Botetourt led all counties with 119 birds taken there.

The black bear hunting season saw 1,997 harvested during the archery, muzzleloader and firearms season. That's a 10 percent decrease from last year.

The biggest harvest involved deer, of which 231,454 were killed during the past season. The take was up by 4 percent.

These numbers will get padded now with the added sunday on private land hunting but the issue remains is that the license fee's have gotten way out of control. I purchased a lifetime of hunting,fishing and trout a bunch of years ago and would have gotten big game, black powder and national forest stamp also but they won't sell them. There is no reason they can't sell lifetime versions of these to save people money and just let me log in to get tags each year to print off or email me the PDF to print off of tags.
