Deer, turkey, bear hunting numbers released by Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has released preliminary figures on the fall and winter hunting seasons, and it was a very good year for sportsmen and women who stalk wild turkey.

The department reports that 3,470 birds were taken during the 2011-12 season, up 29 percent from last year's turkey hunt. Botetourt led all counties with 119 birds taken there.

The black bear hunting season saw 1,997 harvested during the archery, muzzleloader and firearms season. That's a 10 percent decrease from last year.

The biggest harvest involved deer, of which 231,454 were killed during the past season. The take was up by 4 percent.
