Fall Waterways Cleanup Saturday in Roanoke Valley
The Clean Valley Council's Fall Waterway Cleanup is a volunteer effort that has grown over the decade.
The effort has helped collect and clear trash and debris from the Roanoke Valley's rivers and streams.  Last year, volunteers collected 31 tons of trash and 335 tires.

This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, October 1st from 8:30-11:30 a.m.  An after cleanup celebration will be held at Wasena Park.
The main items picked up are plastic bags and cigarette butts which contain toxins to small animals. Volunteers can choose "land or sea" areas to pick up trash and debris. Teams with younger children can help in areas away from the water.
The fall waterways cleanup began in 2000 and has grown steadily from 300 volunteers to over 700 locally.
The Clean Valley Council's website has all of the details about the clean up and a registration form.
    Cleanup supplies will be provided.
