NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Baby squirrels are being rescued by the hundreds from toppled trees and turned in to wildlife centers across Virginia in the wake of Hurricane Irene.
The Daily Press (http://bit.ly/qoUTGM) reports Wildlife Response Inc., a Chesapeake-based group, says its more than three dozen licensed rehabilitators have received more than 330 calls for orphaned squirrels after the hurricane slammed the state on Aug. 27.
The Virginia Beach Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has taken in more than 185 baby squirrels since the storm, while independent wildlife rehabilitators have received dozens of them.
Many of the squirrels will be taken care of by licensed wildlife handlers until they're old enough to be returned to the woods.
