Sunday hunting bill introduced by state Senator

A Sunday hunting bill has been introduced by state Senator Phillip P. Puckett.

This bill would allow hunting or killing of any wild bird or wild animal on Sundays.

Puckett (D) represents the senate's 38th District.

Currently, hunting on Sundays is not allowed with a couple of  exceptions. Raccoon hunting is allowed until 2:00 a.m. Sunday mornings.

This is an issue that has put hunters on both sides of the fight. Several state and national organizations have come out in favor of the lifting the ban, but the grassroots effort headed by Matt O'Brien  and his "Legalize Virginia Sunday Hunting For All" Facebook page has been at the forefront in getting those in favor organized and one voice.

Hunting groups -- like the Virginia Hunting Dog Alliance and Farm Bureau --  have come out against the Sunday hunting.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, at their June 2011 meeting, passed a resolution urging the Legislature to remove the ban on Sunday hunting.

SB151 was referred to the Committee on Agriculture, Conservation, and Natural Resources.

In previous sessions the bill has not made it out of committee.
