A dozen wounded veterans are at Smith Mountain Lake for a few days of fun, but the activities have a serious affect on their lives as they continue to recover.
The four day, three night retreat includes fishing on the lake, archery, shooting and lot of camaraderie.
These are the things these veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan enjoyed doing before their tours of duty
The activities are therapeutic for them.
Dan Frawley did three tours of duty in Iraq.
He was directly hit four times by improvised explosive devices or IED's.
"If I didn't have things like this, have friends with similar experiences, and kind of take the time to do stuff, you know, I probably wouldn't be here. So, stuff like this is just outstanding," said Frawley.
A national organization called Freedom Alliance put this program together with the help of local volunteers.
It supports the military in various ways.
This is focused on vets with physical, mental and emotional injuries.
