CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -

University of Virginia assistant football coaches Anthony Poindexter and Vincent Brown are leaving the program to accept positions at Connecticut.

Poindexter will the defensive coordinator on new coach Bob Diaco’s staff. Brown will coach the linebackers and be the co-defensive coordinator. Diaco was an assistant coach at UVA from 2006 to 2008.

Poindexter just finished his 10th season as an assistant at UVA. He coached the running backs for his first five seasons, and then moved to the defensive side for the next five seasons. He coached the defensive backs in 2009, and coached safeties from 2010 to 2013.

Poindexter played his college ball at UVA, and was named the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1998.

“Anthony Poindexter has been a tremendous asset to the University of Virginia both as a player and assistant coach,” UVA coach Mike London wrote in a news release. “He is one of the all-time greats ever to wear a uniform for UVA. His love for this university has been unyielding. I have seen him develop over the years into a dynamic and passionate coach and, more importantly, mature to be an exceptional person. I feel confident Anthony is ready for the opportunity to take on the duties as a defensive coordinator. This is a great opportunity for his professional development.”

Brown completed his fourth season at UVA in 2013, his first coaching the defensive line. The previous three years he served as the team’s linebackers’ coach. He also worked at UVA in 2007 as a graduate assistant coach. He was a member of London’s staff at Richmond for the 2008 and 2009 campaign. Brown played in the NFL with the New England Patriots.

“Vincent Brown has been a valuable part of my staff both at The University of Richmond, including the 2008 team that won the FCS National Championship, and serving as the linebacker and defensive line coach respectively here at UVA,” London wrote in a news release. “Vince has been afforded an opportunity to take on more duties and responsibilities at UConn and this is a good opportunity for him to continue to advance in the coaching profession.”

Diaco's staff also will include former Cavalier quarterback Wayne Lineburg, who will handle special teams and linebackers.

Former Western Illinois coach Don Patterson was named associate head coach. Patterson coached at Iowa when Diaco played there. He has been at Buffalo for the past three seasons.

Mike Cummings takes over as offensive coordinator, after four years in that position at Central Michigan.
