The Salem Sox opened the Carolina League Playoffs Wednesday night at home against Myrtle Beach and game one in the best-of-three series was the definition of a pitcher's duel.
Luis Dias threw eight strong innings for the Sox, scattering five hits and striking out 4.
It all came down to the bottom of the 10th. With runners on first and second and one out, pinch hitter Cody Koback hit a bloop to third. Pelicans third baseman Drew Robinson barehanded the ball, but threw it over the first baseman's head, allowing Matty Johnson to score the game-winning run, and sending Salem to a 1-0 win.
Game Two is Thursday night in Myrtle Beach.
- Potomac 2, Lynchburg 1 (14 innings): The visiting Hillcats dropped their series opener in 14 innings on Wednesday night. The Nationals' Michael Taylor's single to left field in the bottom of the 14th scored Mike Gilmartin, sending Potomac to a 2-1 walk-off win.
Game Two is Thursday night in Potomac. Ryan Hinson will take the mound for the Hillcats. Hinson had a 4-4 record with a 2.48 earned-run average during the regular season. The lefty played his college ball at Clemson.
The Nationals' starting pitcher will be Blake Schwartz. He was 11-4 with a 2.65 ERA during the regular season.
