BLACKSBURG, Va. -

Virginia Tech’s basketball season held its first practice of the season Monday, and announced some bad news.

Freshman guard Malik Mueller must sit out the 2013-14 basketball season because of academic eligibility issues.

“I am extremely disappointed for Malik,“ Virginia Tech head men’s basketball coach James Johnson wrote in a news release. “This young man has worked very hard this summer both in workouts and in the classroom. I know that Malik will use this year to improve as a better basketball player and will continue his strong work in his academics. He will help this team in practice and from the sidelines.”

Mueller, who is from Germany, remains on scholarship and is allowed to practice. He will have four years of eligibility available when he is allowed to begin competing in games in the fall of 2014.
