BLACKSBURG, Va. -

Every spring football season usually puts new faces, in new places.

There’s no exception for the 2014 Virginia Tech Hokies who turn to fifth year senior, Mark Leal as the guy to replace Logan Thomas.

“I’m the oldest guy so you know I’m put as number one on the depth chart,” said Leal. “But nothing is set in stone. I’m just trying to work every day and separating myself from the pack.”

There’s nobody putting more stock into the quarterback position than Head Coach Frank Beamer, who wants the competition resolved early in fall camp.

“One thing you better make sure you have is a quarterback,” said Beamer. “You can have a really good football team but if you’re quarterback isn’t playing at a high level, you’ll probably be average.”

Other things to watch for this spring: special teams. The Hokies have a slew of new kickers who will look to compete for kicking time as a part of the special teams. Also, at Running Back, Trey Edmunds who had a coming out part against Miami last season was limited after breaking his leg in the Virginia game. Edmunds, however, was rehabbing and is walking without crutches.

The Hokie spring game is April 27th at 2pm inside Lane Stadium.
