The Hokies have gone up against fast paced, up tempo offenses for the past three weeks but they'll get another change of pace this week with Georgia Tech's triple option, a tough offense to prepare for, especially on a short week, but in Bud Foster's tenure as defensive coordinator, the Hokies' defense has risent to the challenge. Tech is 8 and 1 with five days or less to prepare for an opponent.
The Hokies have won three straight in the series against Georgia Tech and five of the last six.
The biggest news out of Blacksburg Monday was that Frank Beamer was sticking with kicker Cody Journell, who was suspended for Saturday's win over Marshall for a violation of team rules.
Despite being suspended twice in the past two seasons, he will be in uniform, and will handle placekicking duties against Georgia Tech.
“He's made some mistakes but he is certainly a good kicker, a good kid, good family,” Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said. “But he’s made some mistakes. But as far as his ability kicking, he's solid.”
Journell could play a vital role against the Yellow Jackets, especially since the Hokies have been less than efficient in the red zone. Through four games this season, Tech ranks just 114th nationally in that category.
The Hokies will make another fashion statement by donning a special Hokie Stone helmet for Thursday's game.
