BLACKSBURG, Va. -

Virginia Tech will turn to a walk-on kicker who made the team through student tryouts to handle its kicking duties for their game against Maryland on Saturday.

Virginia Tech announced that Eric Kristensen will be the starting kicker. This comes after starting kicker Cody Journell was thrown off the team Wednesday.

Kristensen attended student tryouts on Sept. 4, and was added to the roster Sept. 24. He is from Ann Arbor, Mich.

Kristensen will be the 11th true freshman to play for Virginia Tech this season, which is a record in the Frank Beamer era.

Kristensen’s career-long field goal in a high school game is 46 yards. He made a 63-yard field goal in practice without anyone trying to block it.

Out of high school the 5-foot-11-inch, 165-pound freshman was only offered a spot at a NAIA school.

“I had a few walk-on offers, but none of the Division I type,” Kristensen said.

Beamer plans to use Kristensen for point-after tries and field goals from 42 yards and in. Michael Branthover will kick anything longer than 43 yards.
