Virginia Tech and North Carolina will meet Thursday evening.
In a way, these two teams have become mirror images of each other. Due to transfers, graduation and early entry into the NBA draft, North Carolina only plays about eight guys each night. The same as the Hokies who only have eight scholarship players that dress due to injury.
Both teams are also young in the back court relying on underclassmen to handle the ball in key situations. Both teams only have three players in the power forward and center rotation. Carolina, in particular, so far this year has won and lost on the production they have gotten from their freshmen.
There are two match-ups in this game that should be a big factor in deciding the outcome. The first is point guard play between Erick Green and Kendall Marshall. The two played against each other in high school on several different occasion.
Both stepped into big roles this year. The second match-up is between Hokie Center Victor Davila and Carolina seven footer Tyler Zeller. Coach Greenberg has tried some interesting tactics in practice this week to try combat his teams lack of size.
