Newly-named UVA starting QB Rocco to face his uncle this weekend

The Virginia Cavaliers open the football season Saturday at 3 p.m. against Richmond.

Lynchburg product Michael Rocco has been named the Cavs starting quarterback and he'll square off against his uncle, Danny Rocco this weekend.  Danny was named the Spiders new coach in the offseason.

The elder Rocco, who left Liberty University in the spring following 6 seasons in Lynchburg, also spent time as a colleague of UVA Coach Mike London when the two worked together under Al Groh.

They'll be adversaries Saturday, but the two have been friends for a long, long time.

“I have a lot of respect for Danny because when he was here as a coach, he was very detailed,” Wahoos coach Mike London said. “He was very organized and coached his position very well. It didn't surprise me when he went to Liberty that he would do well and I think he'll do well at Richmond. He and my relationship, now prior to playing each other, we won't call each other and ask what we're doing but I'm sure after the game if there's common opponents or something that we need to call for, that we'd take each other's call again.”
