Over nine thousand athletes in over fifty-five sports got the festivities started for the Commonwealth Cup Games on Friday night.
Opening Ceremonies were held Friday night at the Roanoke Civic Center.
The guest speaker was a good example for the local athletes.
Olympic medalist Speed Skater, J-R Celski, gave a few words on his journey as a nineteen year old who at one point had to take a 16 month hiatus because he "burned out" before returning to his beloved sport to reach his goals.
"When I was a little kid I always looked up to people like Lance Armstrong. I never got to hear anybody speak live before. It is great to inspire little kids. To have them look up to me as a role-model. I am still young so I am looking for those people above me but it is good to know that I am inspiring people," said Celski.
