Notre Dame advanced to the NCAA lacrosse semifinals, defeating the Cavaliers 12-10 Sunday after striking for six fourth-quarter goals.
The Irish play Loyola (Md.) on Saturday in Foxboro, Mass. This is the first time Notre Dame beat Virginia in four tries in the NCAA tournament.
The game took a scary turn with 7:41 left after Ryan Foley gave Notre Dame a 9-8 lead. Virginia's Scott McWilliams lowered his left shoulder and slammed into Foley's chin after the goal. Foley was on the ground about five minutes and taken off the field on a stretcher.
According to the team's Twitter feed Foley is alright and made the trip home to South Bend with his team.
The Irish were led by Max Pfeifer's three goals and Steve Murphy's two. Virginia led once, 4-3, on Rob Emery's goal with 9:08 left in the half. Notre Dame responded with consecutive goals in the second quarter by Max Pfeifer, Sean Rogers and Steve Murphy.
