Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms is preparing to issue a statement about the city's efforts to land a pro sports franchise.
The city is mulling whether to build an arena near the oceanfront in hopes of persuading a pro sports team to relocate to the city. The NBA's Sacramento Kings are a likely target after failing to reach an agreement to build a new arena there. Under the proposal Sessoms is backing, sports and entertainment company Comcast-Spectacor would operate the arena and be responsible for finding a team to serve as its primary tenant.
Without a pro team to call the arena home, it wouldn't be built.
Sessoms and Comcast-Spectacor are expected to issue a joint statement on their efforts at a city council meeting Tuesday.
