With a starter (Vaughan Kary) out with an injury, Northern used 12 running backs in its 45-0 win over South Dakota Tech in Rapid City. Top runners for the Wolves were Rich Larson, Jeree Meyers, John Brown, Roger Day, Steve Schulte and Richard Artis.
Northern went 6-0 in the conference, outscoring league opponents 259-41 with three shutouts.
Northern State took a 14-0 lead at halftime of Huron College’s homecoming game, only to see Huron rally to tie the score. Then the Wolves unleashed fullback John Brown, who led his team to successive drives of 75, 34 — now-NSU women’s basketball coach Curt Fredrickson recovered a fumble to set up that drive — and 67 yards for three touchdowns and a 35-21 win.
