From the Farm: It has been a hectic week for us at the farm. Leading up to the Christmas Sale, there were so many preparations that could only be done at the last minute.
The freezing temperatures meant we couldn’t load the truck early. We also couldn’t set everything up at the fairgrounds the night before. Jams, jellies, pickled beets and vegetables would have frozen, as there was no heat in the building.
Barrie brought kerosene heaters so we and our customers would be more comfortable. It took longer for us to set up than usual but once everything was in place, we could relax a little and enjoy visiting with everyone who came in.
Even though there is a lot of work and preparation for this type of sale, I thoroughly enjoy it. Helping everyone get ready for the holidays by providing unique gifts, food items for entertaining and sharing ideas is so rewarding. A few customers purchased items from several vendors then brought them over for me to incorporate in gift baskets. These are thoughtful gifts for the recipient and support our market as well.
Now that the sale is over, I need to concentrate on finishing up gifts for our family and friends. Most everything must be shipped so I need to take care of that this week. As for decorating, I have kept to my promise of scaling back. I put up a much smaller tree and only a few of my favorite decorations.
Barrie and I have decided to forego the usual type of gift giving to each other. We plan to purchase some much-needed home improvement items. They won’t fit under our tree but will be enjoyed for years once installed.
The next  couple of weeks will be filled with holiday entertaining for most people. I am sharing another easy recipe that can be done ahead of time. This is a different kind of cheese ball. Most have savory flavors. This one is lightly sweet and served with butter cookies.

Cheesecake Cheese Ball

2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, room temperature
¾ cup drained fruit cocktail
1⁄8 cup orange juice
1 (3-ounce) package instant French Vanilla pudding mix
Whole almonds
Mix together cream cheese, fruit cocktail, orange juice and pudding mix. Refrigerate.
Form into an oval shape on a serving platter. Use a knife to score the oval diagonally to create diamond shapes.
Place whole almonds in the diamond centers.
Serve with butter cookies.
Note: You can make a very nice presentation by either placing green top of a fresh pineapple at the top of the cheese ball or use frilly leaf lettuce or other greens. This makes a very nice presentation.
