LANCASTER — Jean Johnston, 86, widow of Dr. Rodney Johnston, died Thurs., Sept. 27, 2012 at Heartland Hills Senior Living Center in Lexington. 

Born in Palmerton, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Archie Kuehner and Marjorie Graver Kuehner. She graduated from the nursing school of Temple University Medical Center in Philadelphia and also attended Boston University. Jean became a clinical instructor at Temple University School of Nursing, and later worked at the American Hospital in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, where she served as an elder, sang in the church choir, and taught Sunday school for 40 years. Jean also served on the history committee of Transylvania Presbytery and was co- author of "Heritage of Faith,” a history of First Presbyterian Church from 1816-1996.

She is survived by three children, Phillip (Pamela) Johnston, Douglas Johnston and Susan (David) Jones; three grandchildren, Megan Johnston, Maggie Jones and Riley Jones; two brothers, Morris Kuehner of Venice, Fla., and Mark Kuehner of Fort Washington, Pa. 

A brother, Delbert Kuehner, preceded her in death. 

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, 2012, at Spurlin Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Garrell officiating. Burial in Lancaster Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. 

Active pallbearers are Leroy Horn, John Marsee Jr., Bobby Powell, John Anderson, Joe Leavell and Ray Hammonds. Honorary pallbearers are Earl Shaw, Donna Powell, Betty Murphy, Mary Katherine Horn, Karen Marsee, Barbara Mercer, Nancy Clark and Mary Jo Hammonds.
