  1. Sentimental Journey For Jews To Hartford's North End

    The Hartford Courant
An old city is a living palimpsest, a parchment constantly being erased and written over by migration and development. But the old is never entirely erased, it is there for the looking. Last Sunday I went looking, for signs of the large Jewish...

  7. Large-Scale Figurative Paintings By Beena Azeem on Display at Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford

When it comes to symbolism, Hartford artist Beena Azeem prefers to keep things uncertain. Symbolism surrounds us all the time, she argues, bombarding us with political and sexual meanings in the service of some agenda. Why not leave it open? View five large-scale figurative paintings by Azeem, including "Chaos Theory" (pictured), at the Charter Oak Cultural Center until mid-October. In addition to being an artist, Azeem did HIV/AIDS research in Uganda and Mozambique and graduated from medical school in Pakistan. You can bet those experiences inform her artistic choices.
