1. In Fenger, art builds community

The urge to create is as old as the human race, as ancient as the day someone felt the urge to draw colorful lines across bodies and faces or, more permanently, paint on or carve into the walls of a cave. This sort of self-expression reaches a natural, if daunting, evolutionary step each art fair season, already in full swing.

    3. Fest planner: Midsommarfest, Bellwether, Ribfest and more

It's time to put on your art-gazing goggles this weekend as eight art, lit and craft fests take over 'hoods from the South Loop to Edgewater. Soak up some sunshine while browsing the Old Town Art Fair and Wells Street Art Festival, or drop in to a new art, food and "happening" fest called Bellwether from the organizers of Renegade Craft Fair and Vintage Bazaar. Of course, if art isn't your jam, there's plenty of food and music to scope out at Midsommarfest and Ribfest Chicago. From barbecue sauce to sculpture, here's the best of the weekend's lineup. kbernot@tribune.com @redeyeeatdrink

    5. Fest planner: Do-Division, Maifest, Lincoln Avenue Live and more

This is the kind of fest weekend Chicago loves. Maifest, Do-Division, Lincoln Avenue Live and more bring a little something for everyone, from pretzels and PBR to bands and boutiques. 'Hoods are well represented too, with parties going on in Lincoln Square, Lincoln Park, Wicker Park/Ukrainian Village and the South Loop, to name just a few. There's enough art, live music, sausage and beer to fill a whole weekend, and with some judicious planning, you might even be able to hit up two or three fests—just stay hydrated. kbernot@tribune.com @redeyeatdrink
