3. Advocate Interview: David Mayfield of the David Mayfield Parade

Before hooking up with Cadillac Sky, David Mayfield, a native of Kent, Ohio, was a bluegrass prodigy from a family of musicians (his sister is singer Jessica Lea Mayfield). His debut solo album, simply titled The David Mayfield Parade, highlights Mayfield’s soulful voice and ability to write songs you feel like you’ve always known. A new album, recorded in Nashville’s Studio B (where Patsy Cline’s “Crazy” was recorded) and featuring guest musicians Dierks Bentley and Seth Avett, will be released in early 2013. Mayfield plays at New Haven’s Cafe Nine with Hoots & Hellmouth and Elison Jackson on October 30.

When most music fans think of the mandolin, they usually think of bluegrass. But the stringed instrument is just as comfortable at opera as the Grand Ole Opry.

  9. Abigail Washburn scales her own personal wall of China

Like the troubadours of old, banjo-playing singer Abigail Washburn gets around. She went to college in Colorado and Vermont; played, worked and traveled up and down the East Coast in her early twenties; spent significant time in China; and is now a fixture in Nashville. But she does have a few constants in her life. Among the most prominent: Each year since her 1977 birth in north suburban Evanston, she’s been a regular in Chicago, returning several times a year to visit her extended family.

  15. The Punch Brothers Play at the Jorgensen Center in Storrs on Oct. 4

This generation is undoubtedly experiencing history’s most expansive and diverse collection of musical genres to date. What with the boom of social media and music sharing sites like Facebook and Spotify, it’s effortless for an artist to just pick up a mic or instrument and broadcast their ideas to the world. But this phenomenon is also a double-edged sword. Due to the overwhelming amount of music, most musicians find themselves unable to break new ground. Well, that’s definitely not the case for the Punch Brothers. Although deeply influenced by bluegrass, the group experiments with different sounds. When asked to describe their music, guitarist Chris “Critter” Eldridge had to think about what they actually played. “We’re a string band, a bluegrass band even, that is aspiring to go beyond.”
