  1. Coachella 2013 de-escalates the EDM arms race

For Brit-pop fans, Thursday night's Coachella announcement was like a birthday, Christmas, Hannukah and an unexpected inheritance check all arriving at once. Devotees of the dance-leaning Sahara Tent, however, might be taken aback by the light bill of major EDM superstars, or even rising newbies who haven't played L.A. in the last six months, on the bill this year.

  17. Hanukkah gelt goes upscale -- and ethical

They're almost as much a part of Hanukkah as potato pancakes, the foil-wrapped chocolate candies called gelt that usually come in plastic-mesh bags at the checkout stand and taste pretty much like the leftover wax from the candles in the menorah. Embossed with designs, they're meant to represent the coins that once were given to children as an encouragement for their Jewish studies. (As with most Jewish traditions, there are multiple explanations for the tradition.)

  23. Homemade holiday gift idea: Snowflake pretzel rods

Crunch meets chocolate! Decorated chocolate-covered pretzel rods are sweet, but not too sweet, and during a holiday season likely to be drenched in colorful sugary decorations. Kids can make them with adult supervision, and it won't take all night. Mix and match the decorated pretzels for gift bags.
