3. Add David Foster Wallace to 'unlikable' pantheon

The last time filmmaker Jason Reitman came through town we got into a conversation about unlikable characters. He knows something about unlikable characters: "My first movie was about the head lobbyist for Big Tobacco ('Thank You for Smoking'), my second was about a sarcastic pregnant teenager ('Juno') and my third was about a guy who fires people for a living ('Up in the Air')."

5. Alewives: Justin Bieber, Honey Boo Boo, Riccardo Muti and more

Alewives are the stinky fish that used to wash up en masse on Lake Michigan beaches. So it is that we bring you the 17th annual Alewife Awards to commemorate the rankest cultural flotsam and jetsam to hit our shores over the past year.

7. A version of David Foster Wallace's life

When the great English poet Philip Larkin worked at the University of Hull, he liked to say that the need to change trains in Doncaster meant most journalists, academics and other London irritants didn't bother to harass him.

9. Annoyingly talented

You know what's annoying?
You know what's annoying? Experimental short stories. You know what else is annoying? Adam Levin. He is 35 and grew up on the North Shore. He is talented and can't do anything half- way, which makes him frustratingly, endearingly bold, the twin...

11. Daum: 2012's pop song for grads

Every year around this time, a few notable lines from a few notable commencement speeches start insinuating themselves into the canon of "words to live by." Recent favorites include Steve Jobs' 2005 speech at Stanford ("Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life"). Then there was Stephen Colbert's 2006 address at Knox College about "saying yes." Also in 2005 was David Foster Wallace's now-enshrined speech at Kenyon College, which discussed freedom, among other things, and which I won't even try to sum up in a single quote.
