    Little Carrie in 1896 had to feed the chickens and learn to sew by lamplight. Her son Jim in the 1920s listened to baseball games on the radio. Reggie, growing up in the nearby African American neighborhood in the 1940s, had to haul water from the town pump. But little Jack in 2013 surfs the internet and already knows how to text.
