Monday forecast: Icy start, then showers possible

An icy commute is expected Monday morning, with all of Central Maryland under a winter weather advisory and several hundredths of an inch of ice accumulation possible, according to the National Weather Service. It could be a treacherous start to a strange and varied week of weather.

A wintry mix of precipitation is forecast to start in the early morning, but with some warmer air moving in overhead is expected to switch to freezing rain. Though precipitation is expected to be light, it could cause icing problems on bridges, walkways and highways.

The winter weather advisory was set to be in effect from 3 a.m. to noon.

Temperatures are forecast to rise above freezing early and reach the lower 40s or upper 30s by the afternoon.

A warm-up is expected to begin after the system moves out late Monday. Highs Tuesday are forecast in the lower 50s, and Wednesday in the upper 50s. While the week is starting out with ice, we could see thunderstorms as a cold front moves through that warm air Wednesday, unusual for winter.

A slight chance of thunderstorms is in the forecast for Wednesday afternoon.

Friday is expected to bring another chance of snow, with temperatures falling back down close to or below normal.
