A man and a woman who were hanging on a breakwall in the lake near Buckingham Fountain were pulled from the water this afternoon and taken to the hospital, officials said.

The incident happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. in the 500 block of Lake Shore Drive, according to a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department.

The two, who were hanging onto boat lines attached to a breakwall, were rescued by the Chicago Police Department Marine Unit and taken by paramedics to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the spokesman said.

Both victims were described as in their 50s, police said. One of them was listed in serious-to-fair condition and the other was listed in fair-to-good condition, he said.

It was not clear how the two landed in the water.
