A Glen Ellyn man has been charged with neglect of his 88-year-old mother, who died after she was found naked, dehydrated and emaciated on the floor, DuPage County prosecutors said Friday.
John Gault, 64, of the 400 block of Elm Street, was charged with criminal neglect of an elderly person following the death of his mother, Margaret, according to a press release issued by the DuPage County State Attorney’s Office.
Emergency officials were called to the house the mother and son shared on Jan. 16. That’s where they found Margaret Gault on the bedroom floor. Investigators said she had been on the floor for several weeks and had sores on her shoulder blades and tailbone, the release said. They believe she died because of an infection from the sores.
In the press release, State Attorney Robert Berlin called the allegations “horrendous.”
Gault turned himself in Friday morning, after a $3,000 arrest warrant was issued for him on March 11. He posted $300, which is 10 percent of his bond, and was released.
Gault could not immediately be reached for comment on Friday.
Gault’s two felony counts could each result in three to seven years in prison. He is scheduled to be back in court on April 15.
