  1. The false analogy between abortion and gay marriage

If the tenor of their questions is any indication, the justices on the U.S. Supreme Court appeared evenly divided in the challenge to California's law banning gay marriage, with Justice Anthony Kennedy, predictably, in the middle. But rather than deciding...

  3. Letters: North Dakota's abortion decision

Re "N. Dakota's dubious honor," Editorial, March 19 As an obstetrician and gynecologist, I strongly urge North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple to put women and families first and veto the bill banning abortions after a fetus' heartbeat can be detected. I...

  5. Prop. 8: Antonin Scalia surprisingly tame in gay marriage hearing

Justice Scalia lays a gay marriage trap for Ted Olson. There was a silly fertility joke about Strom Thurmond, but Scalia Watchers hoping to see the famously acid-tongued justice in action were out of luck Tuesday. The irascible U.S. Supreme Court...

  7. Conservative justices hint at procedural barrier to DOMA ruling

WASHINGTON -- Two of the Supreme Court's most conservative members suggested Wednesday that procedural barriers should prevent the justices from ruling on the constitutionality of the federal law that denies benefits to legally married same-sex couples, but a majority of the justices seemed inclined to push past those issues.

  17. Scalia gets it right

In his opinions on abortion and gay rights, Justice Antonin Scalia has taken an offensively narrow view of the Constitution's guarantees of due process and equal protection of the laws. But when it comes to the 4th Amendment's more specific protection against unreasonable searches and seizures, Scalia has been a strong voice for individual rights. That was the case again Tuesday. Writing for a 5-4 majority, Scalia came down hard on police in Florida who, without having obtained a warrant, deployed a drug-sniffing dog at a homeowner's front door.
