"I'm working out, traveling for work or at Guy Chemical and doing more workouts," the self-proclaimed bike nerd said. "I even worked out right before my son's wedding because of an Ironman competition."
He is also busy watching his calorie intake and nutrition levels. Berkebile has the metabolism of a 12-year-old and a lean five percent body fat.
He averages 4,300 calories a day to maintain his body weight. His favorite pre-race meal is steak and pasta with a baked potato on the side.
"You can't skip a meal," he said. "But you also have to watch what you are putting in your body. I drink two gallons of milk a week and a lot of chocolate milk for recovery. I also eat and drink during a race. When you are swimming, biking and running 140.6 miles over 11-15 hours in one day you have to know what you can tolerate."
Berkebile is in a lower intensity training period, but will step up the intensity after the first of the year. He will also be breaking ground for a second building for Guy Chemical in the spring.
