Somerset Garden Club received an Environmental Education and Youth Horticulture Education Award at the Garden Club Federation of PA Convention held in Philadelphia, April 21-24.
The club members worked with 22 students at the Children's Aide Home. The garden topics demonstrated were growing vegetables, perennials, using rain barrels to conserve water, composting and learning about sustainable forestry. This is an ongoing project the Somerset Garden Club participates in May through October each year.
The club also received five youth poetry awards. The club sponsored the students at St. Peter's School in Somerset. Students were to write poems about "Colorful Fruits" or "Tasty Vegetables."
The winners are: first grade Bena Croushore first place; second grade Will Reeping second place, Elyse Latshaw third place, and Jessica Yahner honorable mention; third grade Ella Jano honorable mention.
