  17. Chan Lowe: The Internet sales tax

This is going to be interesting. Republican dogma unequivocally asserts that taxes stifle free enterprise. But here we have a situation where the imposition of a tax will benefit a segment of the retail universe that is a mainstay of traditional hometown values, and as we all know, hometown folks make themselves heard at Congressional town hall meetings. They also vote in their local district elections, while Jeff Bezos does not.

  21. Should Congress allow states to collect taxes on Internet sales?

The U.S. Senate just passed a bill that will allow states to require Internet retailers to collect sales taxes for state and local governments. Under current law, states can only require retailers with a physical presence within their borders to collect sales taxes. As online sales have grown, states as a group are missing out on billions of dollars in taxes on purchases made by their residents from online retailers based in other states. Supporters also argue that online retailers that don’t collect sales taxes have an unfair price advantage over traditional retailers, which must collect the taxes. But opponents say online retailers could bear an impossible burden if they are forced to collect taxes according to a welter of different rules and rates, depending on where a customer might be. Opponents also argue that the Senate bill would punish consumers, who pay too much in  taxes already. What do you think? Talk about it!
