Special to The Morning Call

Thwart Design’s Rob Price, who has gained a cult following for parodies of Design Within Reach, does take some things seriously. 15. Jens Risom's classic chair design at Design Within Reach

Danish designer Jens Risom's first foray into creating furniture for modern American homes was the 666 WSP, an instantly recognizable World War II-era chair with a beech frame and webbing made from parachute straps. Later, in 1949, designing for the Caribe Hilton in Puerto Rico, he crafted a lounge chair and ottoman -- classics that the 92-year-old Risom has now partnered with Design Within Reach to reproduce. The Jens armchair and ottoman are available with a new bench made of a solid maple frame and reversible slipcovered cushions in mushroom, shown here, and chartreuse. Floor models arrive next week at select DWR studios, including locations in L.A., Beverly Hills and Newport Beach. Through Jan. 27, the chain's flooring and upholstered furniture are 20% off, reducing the armchair to $880, the ottoman to $440 and the bench to $1,100. www.dwr.com.

  17. On sale: Philippe Starck's Bubble Club

When it first appeared in 2000, Philippe Starck's Bubble Club seemed a strange hybrid: a 21st century plastic seat with the roll arms of a 19th century chair. Now, with the advent of Minimalist Baroque styling in home decor, it makes real sense. Until July 29, the weatherproof piece by Kartell, regularly priced at $680, is on sale for $408 at Design Within Reach. The Sunbrella cushion, shown here in parrot green, is reduced 15%, to $102. The chair and cushion coordinate nicely with the Pix cafe table, a quick-assembly 2002 design by Peter Schaffner that consists of two X-shaped legs held together by a 31 1/2 -inch table top that snaps onto the base like a lid. The cafe version in green, shown here, is marked down to $98, from $250. To order or to find a retail location: (800) 944-2233 or www.dwr.com.

  21. Design Within Reach adds Tools for Living store

After a long emphasis on designer furniture, Design Within Reach has launched Tools for Living, a 1,500-square-foot store adjacent to the Santa Monica DWR with about 900 accessories for the home and office. Tools for Living will focus on "finding contemporary designs that are easy to use and have an honesty of materials, made by undiscovered names from around the world," says buyer Kari Woldum, right, with co-worker Sally Yang. The sleek shop opened last week with standout items that include unembellished linen towels for kitchen and bath by the Japanese firm Fog, and modern ice cream scoops, bottom right. Wool poufs from Holland look as if they must have been made with baseball bat-sized knitting needles. The Tools for Living concept has already sparked an online parody by Rob Price and Kathy Park of the New York firm Thwart Design, www.thwartdesign.com. "Tools for Dying plays on the idea of extending the reach of design even further -- 6 feet under," says Price, who created the popular Web page (including a satirical take on George Nelson's midcentury clocks, left) as a sequel to his 2005 send-up, Design Without Reach. Says Tools for Living's Woldum: "They didn't really research what we would be carrying in the store, but imitation is flattering, and we loved the spoof." 332 Santa Monica Blvd.; (310) 458-0543; www.dwr.com.

  23. For Pierre André Senizergues, skater cool meets SoCal beach house

AT 22, Pierre André Senizergues moved from the suburbs of Paris to skateboarding's Valhalla: Venice Beach. "I was living in a Ford Econoline van for the first six months," he says, adding that his next home was a Manhattan Beach surf shack where he paid $50 a month to crash behind a sofa.
