3. Lowering emissions, raising red flags

We've all seen the movie: Some small, seemingly unrelated actions lead to dire and unintended consequences. It happens in real life too, especially in government. The Low Carbon Fuel Standard, a regulatory program established under Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, was intended to reduce California carbon emissions, but it may come with some terrible unintended consequences.

  9. Ethanol and food security - getting past the anti-ethanol rants

Here we go again - another group arguing that the cost of producing ethanol from corn is food insecurity. From this group we will no doubt see retreads of all these tired arguments, but will have to bear a load of fear-mongering as well-as other...

  17. Controversy Persists Over EPA's Four-Gallon Rule

    KickingTires

  19. When 'forever' plans are trumped at the pump

Q: We planned to keep our 2002 BMW 745i "forever." Since my husband and I are both in our 70's we do very little driving and don't want to buy a new car. We were dismayed to learn that the ethanol content of gasoline will soon be increased to 15 percent....

  21. Believe it or not, their fuel economy improved 30 percent

Q: I drive a 2010 Mazda 3 that has 47,000 miles. When I fill up I always reset the trip odometer and have typically gotten 300 +/- miles per tank and usually refill when the light comes on. The last 30 days without any other observable difference I am getting much better mileage traveling 450 miles +/tank. I even had the dealer check the odometer for accuracy. I have been so nervous that I refill when at 1/2 tank fearing the gas gauge is faulty but consistently I only need 6 gallons or so to fill it up. Is there any explanation for this? I suppose I should just be happy about it but have a long trip planned for October and do not want to sit on the side of the road out of gas.
