  1. How the horses of the Preakness get their names

Secretariat. Man O' War. Citation. Maybe, if he manages to win a couple more races in the next few weeks, Animal Kingdom.
Secretariat. Man O' War. Citation. Maybe, if he manages to win a couple more races in the next few weeks, Animal Kingdom. These are the names of some of the greatest thoroughbreds ever, horses that ran to glory on tracks like Pimlico, Churchill Downs and...

  3. Refined drinking set for Columbia

Wine, woods, and weather that sounds like it should be just wonderful.
Wine, woods, and weather that sounds like it should be just wonderful. With all that to offer, organizers of this weekend's Wine in the Woods festival wonder why anyone would opt to hang out with a bunch of horses and a centaur named Kegasus when they're...

  5. Coffee Companion -- 5/19

Each morning, Monday through Friday, I'll hook you up with reading material to skim through as you slug down coffee and slack off at the start of your workday -- that way I'll have an excuse to do the same at the start of mine.

  7. Preakness: Maryland racing's moment of truth

From the Alibi Breakfast to the solid-silver Woodlawn Vase and the Black-eyed Susan blanket draped over the winning horse, the Preakness Stakes is steeped in history and tradition. Tomorrow's much-anticipated contest at Pimlico Race Course will be —...

  9. Horse industry a boost to Maryland

Thank you for your recent coverage of horse racing in Maryland, but I would offer a different and somewhat larger perspective. I came to Maryland because of the horse industry — to fox hunt, show, run pony camps, teach, breed horses and ponies,...

  11. Kegasus says Preakness worship is not to blame for 'The Rapture'

Great news, everyone. I tracked down Kegasus in his “man stall,” and after he made all the reporters on hand close their eyes and throw darts at a dartboard, he finally answered all the softball questions they had to throw at him. But here at Baltimore Sports Blitz, I ask the hard questions -- even to hairy, sweaty, husky men who get paid by the Maryland Jockey Club to wear half of a horse costume in public.

  13. Ravens' Billy Cundiff is competing in Preakness cornhole tourney

I got a tip that Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff was competing in the Preakness Infield cornhole tournament. If I wasn’t looking for Cundiff -- who was wearing a polo, shorts and a pair of shades -- I wouldn’t have recognized him among all the college kids and young professionals tossing bean bags inside the tent.

  15. It just isn't Preakness without a bikini competition, right?

The Infield bikini competition was held in the late morning today, so I scrambled from the awkwardness that was Kegasus’ man stall and weaved through a crowd of pervy guys and their angry girlfriends to catch the end of the event. Afterward, I chatted with the winner and couple of other competitors.

  17. NBC telecast graciously ignores Kegasus

Thank goodness the rest of the world has more taste than Baltimore and the powers that do advertising for Pimlico and the Preakness. I followed the coverage of the race on Channel 11 and then the national coverage of the Preakness, and only once that I...

  19. Preakness and the rapture: a bettor's guide to the end of the world

Handicapping a horse race like Saturday's Preakness is an iffy proposition for amateurs like me. Over the years, horse players of my acquaintance have picked favorites based on the names of the colts; any horse with a name resembling that of a relative was an automatic choice. The color of the jockey's silks also figured in the equation; ladies do love pink. Then there were picks based on the size of the horse's rump, with bigger being better.
