  1. Civil Rights Leader Diane Nash Speaks at The Quick Center for the Arts in Fairfield on Jan. 31

    Diane Nash became involved in the nonviolent Civil Rights Movement in 1959 when she was a student at Fisk University. She was the chairperson of a student sit-in in Nashville in 1960, the first southern city to desegregate its lunch counters, and she coordinated the Freedom Ride from Birmingham to Jackson in 1961. John F. Kennedy appointed her to a national committee that promoted passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. And all of this is recent enough in our nation's history that Nash is still out and about, talking about her experiences. She'll be at the Quick Center Thursday night as part of Fairfield University's annual commemoration of the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. in which she'll have a moderated conversation with University students. But it's free, and open to the public. <strong></strong>

  2. Our Picks: M.L.K. Celebrations in Fairfield County

    There are plenty of ways to pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this week, as we take a day off from working to celebrate his legacy (just in case you were suffering from holiday withdrawal). Friday, the Serendipity Chorale of Fairfield County returns to <strong>Temple Shearith Israel</strong> (46 Peaceable St., Ridgefield. Fri., Jan. 18, 7:30 p.m.) Friday night to sing African American and Jewish spirituals in memory of King, and hold a reading of his "I Have a Dream" speech. Monday, kids ages 5 through 11 are invited to the <strong>Westport Historical Society</strong> (25 Avery Place, Westport. Mon., Jan. 21, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. $60) where Westport artist Roe Halper will help them create watercolors on the theme of peace, unity and understanding, and share her own story of meeting Dr. King in Westport. Also on Monday, Dr. Yohuro Williams of Fairfield University will deliver a lecture on Black Power in Southern Connecticut at the <strong>Fairfield Museum and History Center</strong> (370 Beach Road, Fairfield. Mon., Jan. 21, 7 p.m. $7) and <strong>The Bruce Museum</strong> (1 Museum Dr., Greenwich. Mon., Jan. 21, 10 a.m.) will host a performance of <em>Rosa's Ride: The Life of Rosa Parks</em>.

  3. Bang on a Can All-Stars Perform at The Quick Center in Fairfield on Jan. 26

    Since 1992, the Bang on a Can All-Stars have worked with avant-garde musicians like Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Burmese circle drum master Kyaw Kyaw Naing and DJ Spooky. They recorded Brian Eno's ambient <em>Music for Airports</em>, and they've performed with everyone from Philip Glass to Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth. Saturday night they play the Quick Center, and while we don't know that the program/setlist/whatever-you-want-to-call-it will include, but its guaranteed to push the boundaries of experimentation.

    Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906) was ahead of his time. His realistic pieces were shocking and scandalous when he wrote them, but he didn't give a damn. The issues he dealt with then are still relevant today, though it's no longer considered taboo material. It is partially due to Ibsen's contributions that this is so. See Fairfield U's resident production company Theatre Fairfield open its 2012-1013 season with the political drama <em>An Enemy of the People</em>, an exploration of what happens when a doctor discovers his town's water supply is polluted, but instead of being praised he is silenced by local businessmen and politicians.
