1. The Polo Lounge, back in fine form

Would you like anchovies? What about capers? How spicy do you like your steak tartare? The waiter at the Beverly Hills Hotel's Polo Lounge who asks for my guest's preferences is as solicitous as my grandmother's doctor asking after her health. The various ingredients are mixed tableside into the raw beef, with professional panache. Good, maybe not quite as spicy as intended, the tartare, served with the warm, toasted brioche seems like a swell way to start off an evening at the legendary Polo Lounge.

  4. At Cafe Rouge, dinner is the show

I can't believe it. At 8 o'clock on a Friday night, four of us are the sole guests at Leatherby's Cafe Rouge, the new restaurant at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa. Twenty minutes later, two tables are filled. Total. Considering that this is one of the brightest new restaurants to open in Orange County in years, I'm floored. It's chic and très moderne, even a little sexy, with a curved glass facade, sleek high-sided booths and a petite bar. South Coast Plaza is only a couple of blocks away, and plenty of other nearby restaurants are packed.

  6. E. Baldi caters to a select crowd

The Baldi family of Ristorante Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica, the neighborhood Italian for the A-list crowd, has a new offspring in Beverly Hills. That would be E. Baldi, headed up by Giorgio's son Edoardo and his wife, Darnell.

  8. Mystery fuels huge popularity of web's Lonelygirl15

Lonelygirl15 appears to be an innocent, home-schooled 16-year-old, pouring her heart out for her video camera in the privacy of her bedroom. But since May, her brief posts on the video-sharing site YouTube and the social networking hub MySpace have launched a Web mystery eagerly followed by her million-plus viewers: Who is this sheltered ingenue who calls herself "Bree," and is she in some sort of danger -- or, worse, the tool of some giant marketing machine?

  10. Ford's Filling Station

As our little group rounds the corner, we can see the waiters at the Italian restaurant look up with hope written all over their faces. But like the couple hurrying by just ahead of us, we walk right on past. Some advice: Don't make eye contact, it's just too painful. The Italian place is almost empty, yet a few doors down, the new Ford's Filling Station is a riotous clamor.

  12. Memphis

In the midst of Hollywood Boulevard's rampant commercial district sits a grand Queen Anne Victorian, the last of the residential buildings from the era before there even was a Hollywood per se. In its 103 years, the two-story cottage has seen a lot and could probably tell some tales. From 1911 to 1926, the Janes' House, as it was known, was used as a schoolhouse for the offspring of movie stars and moguls, including Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and Cecil B. DeMille's little ones. The last of the Janes sisters died in her 90s in the '90s, and all sorts of plans were hatched to use the historic building. Nothing actually happened until Adolfo Suaya and partners bought the building.

  14. Bella Cucina

Tattoo and piercing artists, newsstands and edgy bars, Musso & Frank and the American Cinematheque all inhabit the same stretch of Hollywood Boulevard. And right in its midst, a new restaurant called Bella has appeared at the corner of Las Palmas and Hollywood Boulevard. As it happens, it's right next door to Rokbar, one of the sexiest lounges in town right now. On nights when something's happening there, it can be a mob scene outside as valets sprint up, open doors, jump into the driver's seat and gun off into the night.
