1. They're creepy and they're kooky

It's all very familiar. The finger-snapping opening theme. A black-clad Morticia snipping the heads off flowers. Uncle Fester making a lightbulb glow by putting it in his mouth. Daughter Wednesday torturing her brother Pugsley on a rack.

5. Cannes honcho Thierry Fremaux is Hollywood's inside man

When Baz Luhrmann’s "The Great Gatsby" raises the curtain on the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, it will serve, among other things, as an indication that the love affair between the festival and Hollywood is alive and well — much more than the last time Luhrmann opened Cannes, 12 years ago, with "Moulin Rouge." Back then, relations between Cannes and Tinseltown had hit something of a low, with few studio films of the late ’90s making the trek to the Croisette ("Beyond Rangoon," anyone?). When he joined Cannes in 2001, festival director Thierry Fremaux was immediately tasked by fest president Gilles Jacob with a peacemaking mission to the West Coast, and the decade since has been one of the richest for le cinema Americain on the Riviera — even if the biggest Cannes-launched Oscar winner of recent years was a French production: "The Artist."

7. Wisdom, beer flow freely in Northlight's 'Stella and Lou'

THEATER REVIEW: 'Stella and Lou' at Northlight Theatre ★★★
Being the kind of tavern where the sunlight generally is about as welcome as a penniless A.J. Pierzynski, Lou's bar in South Philadelphia is expected to light up when Rhea Perlman walks into the joint in a summer dress. And, at the Northlight Theatre in...

9. Predictions reach high pitch for Cannes awards

Unlike the Grammys or the Oscars, the Cannes Film Festival awards keep things simple and the numbers low. At the 66th closing ceremony tonight, main competition jury president Steven Spielberg and his illustrious colleagues (Nicole Kidman, Christoph Waltz, director Ang Lee and five others from around the world) will reveal their selections in a handful of categories—seven, if past festivals are any guide, with the option for a special award if Spielberg and company see fit.

CANNES, France — Whatever its commercial fortunes when it opens in the U.S. this December, "Inside Llewyn Davis" already has won the acclaim sought so ardently by the fictional folk singer of its title, the latest charismatic loser in a long, stumbling conga line of Coen brothers protagonists.

23. Review: 'Kon-Tiki' a tale retold of determined seafarers

"Kon-Tiki" is a ripping yarn torn from yesterday's headlines. Though somewhat forgotten now, the 1947 story of six men, an oceangoing raft and a wild and crazy theory was a media sensation that gripped the world's imagination — and launched a thousand tiki bars.
