  1. Wistful Cole Porter revue is just right for Chicago summer

Vocal quality really matters at the Theo Ubique Theatre Company, the shabby-chic venue for small musicals in Rogers Park, so it's no surprise that director Fred Anzevino's simple but delightful and lovely new summer Cole Porter revue is beautifully sung. But familiarity with this special, no-dress-code place does not compromise the sheer pleasure of perching oneself on a bar stool or at a cramped table, feeling the warm breeze from the street and "L" tracks outside, and experiencing the only-in-Chicago auditory combination of "Let's Misbehave," sung with passionate enthusiasm, and the words "doors closing," spoken with, well, comforting CTA certitude.

    <strong>"L'imitation of Life"&nbsp;</strong>

  9. 10 things you might not know about razed Chicago

Ever since the Great Fire of 1871, a cycle of destruction and rebuilding has been central to the Chicago story. This month, Northwestern University secured a permit to tear down Prentice Hospital so that it can build a biomedical research facility. Also this month, speculation arose (and was quickly squelched) about tearing down Wrigley Field's iconic scoreboard. And today is the 10th anniversary of one of the most unusual acts of demolition in city history &mdash; Mayor Richard M. Daley's middle-of-the-night destruction of Meigs Field.

  23. A steak deal, just like in olden days

Seven dollars and 99 cents doesn't stretch like it used to, but it still buys a steak dinner downtown. On the northeast corner of the Thompson Center, beneath "L" tracks that rumble and screech every other minute, Ronny's endures. Trendier steakhouses on Rush Street have become a business account expenditure and once-a-year occasion. Ronny's, meanwhile, may be the one steakhouse in the city that lists prices on its window.
