Meet another member of South Florida's many-sided faith community. This week we're talking with Alvin Daniels, minister of the Pembroke Park Church of Christ.
Q: Why did you leave your other career for a ministerial vocation?
A: I was invited to the church. I had no idea I'd be a minister one day. It was an incremental process. I had an impetus to go out and help others grow.
Q: What's the one most mistaken impression about the Church of Christ?
A: Maybe some think we're too conservative. But we'd answer that we're just sticking to the Bible, adhering to what is written.
Q: Do you have an overall philosophy of ministry?
A: To reach in and then reach out, so that God can transform my life, then transform the world around us.
Q: What's the favorite part of your work?
A: It has to be preaching, the ability to articulate the gospel of Jesus Christ in a way that is relevant.
Q: What's the hardest part?
A: Not having all of the answers to people's problems. Like when a family has lost a mom, a father and a child. You've been saying that God is too wise to make a mistake. But when you're looking into the faces of people who are devastated, you don't know what to say that moment.
Q: Favorite pastime?
A: I'm an avid pingpong player. I like to feel I can beat anybody.
Q: What's your favorite vacation spot?
A: Jamaica. It's laid-back. Nobody's in a hurry to do anything, including get out of your way.
Q: Do you have any favorite film(s)?
A: "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" It's a laugh with a moral twist to it. A life in almost a biblical context. I also love westerns, like "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."
Q: Favorite music? Favorite performer(s)?
A: A group at my church, Inspiration. It's a cappella music. It's very uplifting and encouraging.
Q: Do you have a treasured possession?
