  1. OUR HEALTH: Humans have the Upper Hand in Robotic Surgery

    I played with the da Vinci Surgery System<sup>TM</sup>&nbsp; -- aka a robotic surgery system -- during the Carilion Women&rsquo;s Health Fair at the New River Valley Mall in early April. Though that term &ldquo;robotic&rdquo; brought to my mind inhuman creatures with blank eyes using their steely appendages to perform Frankensteinian mutilations on human flesh, my imaginings were misguided. Humans remain in charge during a robotic surgery. In southwest Virginia, this has been true since 2001, when Carilion began using the daVinci system for treatment of heart patients. Since then, they&rsquo;ve expanded its application to patients in urology, urogyenocology, and gynecology.
