1. Probiotics: A gut-check on bacterial health

A fascinating, if disconcerting, fact: More than 100 trillion so-called good bacteria thrive in or on the human body. A sizable chunk of them maintain residence in the human digestive tract. Probiotics, live microorganisms that benefit their human host, are among these beneficial bacteria.

5. Savage Love: Quickies

Last week, I appeared at a "Savage Love Live" event at Radford University in Radford, Virginia. Questions are submitted on index cards at SLL events, which allows questioners to remain anonymous and forces them to be succinct. The crowd at Radford was large and inquisitive. The students submitted more questions than I could possibly hope to answer in two hours — and Radford students also managed to stump me. Twice. I promised the crowd that I would get answers for the two stumpers and answer as many of their other questions as I could in this week's column. And here we go…

9. Dan Deacon's Ottobar show a love letter to Baltimore's music scene

If electronic musician Dan Deacon is anything, he is fiercely loyal to his adopted hometown of Baltimore. Last night's sold-out show at the Ottobar wasn't so much a coronation; that ship has long since sailed. Rather, its familiar dance party feel,...

11. Wooded Island is haven for birds — and birders

If warblers had Outlook calendars, the month of September would be marked, "Fly south."
If warblers had Outlook calendars, the month of September would be marked, "Fly south." And some would have an extra note: "Stop at Wooded Island." They do, in profusion. For anyone curious to see the colorful birds that pass through Chicago on their...

13. Technology pinches terminology

For me, one very practical result has come out of the Apple vs. Samsung smartphone technology smackdown. I could never keep it straight in my head whether pinching made the screen bigger or smaller.

17. A look at Rambo's life today

The first few weeks and months with Sid were a challenge. I could tell you about the string of appointments with vets. Or how he spent all that time cowering in a corner, staring at us as if we were his evil captors. But I'd rather tell you about his life today.

19. Advice: How to tell men dirty hands aren't sexy in the bedroom

I love men, and I gravitate toward dirty ones. Not dirty like kinky; dirty like rough and tumble, scruffy-faced and dirty hands. I also really enjoy those hands in special, delicate ecosystems of mine, if you get my drift. This has resulted in some issues, such as a lovely jalapeno burn down under from a guy who made me nachos one night and didn't wash after. I need a nice, sexy way to tell my men, "Wash your freaking hands before you go spelunking!" Advice?
